The Jefferson Airplane(杰斐逊飞机乐队)是由Marty Balin于1965年建立起来的摇滚乐队，当时共6人。起先他们在俱乐部演奏一些民谣摇滚和披头士的歌曲，后来与RCA唱片公司签约，发行专辑《杰斐逊飞机起飞》(Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, 1966)但销路不佳。不久，他们采用了迷幻摇滚风格，与吸毒文化相联系，而且由于吸收了一位女歌手Grace Slick，情况才发生了变化。1967年，他们的第二张专辑《超现实主义枕头》(SurrealisticPillow)取得了巨大的成绩。因此，杰斐逊飞机被称为嬉皮士时代"旧金山声音"最主要的代表，成了美国最负盛名的摇滚团体之一。在Jefferson Airplane早期的作品中，既有宣扬博爱、反对战争的主题思想，又可以看到他们对药物的体验。乐队发展到后期，作品中就很少以“爱”为主题了，取而代之的是一些政治倾向很强的作品，这也许是由于“嬉皮”运动的失落所造成的。他们在后来的音乐中加入了合成器，开创了电子实验音乐，使各种电子乐器的表现力得到了极大地丰富和扩展，可以说在当时以噪音为主的摇滚乐时代里，他们创造了一种相对高层次的音乐。不过后来乐队经历了多次人员更迭，甚至连乐队的名字也经常变换，从最早的Jefferson Airplane到Jefferson Starship再到后来的Starship，历经了20多年的沧桑。尽管乐队的名字不断地在变化，但是他们创作的音乐甚至在80年代后期仍不时地取得成功。
